Ask about a personal installment loan or using the equity in your home. A lender can help you compare the options.

What could it cost monthly?

Start with your own numbers. The project cost below is an example, not a bank offer.

A plan before the project

The right questions.
A clearer next step.

Start with what your home needs. Then consider how borrowing could fit your budget.

  1. Know the project cost

Gather contractor estimates and separate essential repairs from optional improvements. Leave room in your budget for unexpected costs.

  2. Compare the type of borrowing

Ask about personal installment loans, fixed home equity loans and home equity lines of credit. Home equity borrowing uses your home as collateral.

  3. Talk through the whole cost

Discuss the available repayment period, interest rate, fees and monthly payment with a lender before making a decision.

Before you take the next step

A few good
questions to ask.

Use the estimate as a starting point.
A conversation fills in the details.

Can I use the calculator for a home equity line of credit?

No. This calculator models a fixed-rate loan repaid in equal monthly payments. A home equity line of credit can have a variable rate, a draw period and different repayment terms. Ask a lender to explain the payments for that option.

Do I have to use my home as collateral?

Home equity loans and lines of credit use your home as collateral. Greenville Savings Bank also describes secured and unsecured personal installment loans. Ask which option, if any, is available for your project and circumstances.

Is this estimate a loan quote or an application?

No. The calculator is a planning tool using the numbers you enter. It does not check your credit, submit an application or show an approved bank rate. Contact the bank for current terms and application requirements.
